All the research shows that people don’t learn effectively when they just sit and listen to a trainer. Or look at PowerPoint slides. They learn best when they can:

Course Content And Structure
The final length and content of the course will depend on discussions with you and your trainers and will depend on their level of experience and their needs. However, it can be very flexible. For example, a 3 day course could be run over a number of weeks or 2 days could be run together with a third day a few weeks later where people can come back and have practice sessions to try out what they learned.
Here are some areas which would typically be included.
How adults learn
What you need to know about how people learn, based on recent research. You will learn:
- the learning cycle – what it is and how to use it to make sure your training works
- key principles of adult learning - 8 factors which help people to learn, commontraining mistakes which inhibit learning and how to avoid them, how to make sure your training is “brain-friendly” so that people learn easily
- learning preferences – how people differ in the ways they approach learningand how to make sure your training works for everyone
How to get people in a receptive state for learning
People’s attitudes and their mental and emotional state have a huge impact on their ability to learn.
You will learn:
- why it’s critical to get learners motivated and interested
- what is a ‘receptive state’ for learning? Would you know one if you saw it?
- common barriers to learning which you need to address
- ways to overcome people’s resistance to learning
- what needs to happen before people even turn up for your training to get them in the right state
How to make learning stick
How can you help people to remember and apply what they have learned? You will learn:
- how to help people to remember what they learn – how to use stories, movement, visuals, associations and other methods
- how to increase the transfer of learning to the workplace
- how to reinforce and support the learning after the training event so it doesn’t just drain away once people have left
How to get people involved – using questions
Being a great presenter isn’t enough, you need to get people involved by getting them thinking and talking.
You will learn:
- how to ask the right questions to keep people involved and to support learning
(and why many trainers don’t do this well)
- how you can always get answers from an unresponsive group
- how to get questions from the group, and how to answer them (even if you don’t know the answer)
- how to build your training around “coaching questions” to have more impact
How to get people involved – how to choose and use activities
How to set up activities so people learn for themselves, how to get creative and have fun while still achieving your objectives. You will learn:
- The advantages (and hidden dangers) of small group activities
- How to set up group exercises successfully - the techniques to use, the common pitfalls to avoid
- How to use the right activities for each occasion – 6 things you need to think about before using any activity
- How to get creative – use card games, board games and other fun activities to inspire learning
How to create and use powerful visual aids
Visual aids such as drawings, diagrams, pictures and cartoons can be used to great effect, but you need to know when and how to use them. You’ll learn:
- When and how to use visual aids to support learning
- Choices, choices – how to decide which medium to use
- The right way to use PowerPoint or any other slideshow software
- What you should NEVER do with PowerPoint (but most trainers do)
- How to design bright, attention-grabbing flipcharts (even if you can’t draw)
- How to use handouts and workbooks
On the 3 day version of the programme, trainers will have a chance to deliver a 15 minute practice session and receive direct individual feedback from myself and from the group.
A 3 stage programme to get results!
Transform Your Training courses actually consist of three stages:
- Before the Course – I will discuss your organisation’s needs and provide welcome packs and questionnaires to get people in a positive frame of mind and ensure everyone gets what they need from the course.
- During the Course – stimulating and challenging content, lively and engaging delivery, brain-friendly toys, sweets and activities to keep people’s attention and support the learning.
- After the Course – Free email and telephone follow-up and further materials sent out in the weeks following the course to reinforce what was learned.
Also, all participants will receive a copy of my book, “How To Design And Deliver Great Training”.
The course works best with small group numbers, which allows for plenty of interaction and discussion and also allows time for the practice sessions. For this reason, a maximum group size of 12 is ideal ( or 8 if you wish to have a day of practice sessions ).
The course is available to be run in – house at your own premises or at any other venue to be organised and provided by your organisation.
The cost of running the programme in-house will be:
- 2 day programme £2,600
- 3 day programme (including skills practice) £3,500
plus travel and accommodation costs as necessary.
